Begrijpend lezen
Hanie van Leeuwen, ooit lid van de Eerste Kamer, bindt vandaag naar eigen zeggen een nieuwe en belangrijke Politieke Strijd aan: die tegen "onduidelijk taalgebruik". Want wat is het probleem? Teveel Nederlanders lezen op een laag niveau. Sterker nog, 1,5 miljoen Nederlanders schijnen "laaggeletterd" te zijn. Dat wil zeggen dat ze wel letters herkennen als je het ze voorzichtig vraagt, maar in de dagelijkse praktijk analfabeet zijn. Tijd om er iets aan te doen, vindt Hannie: de overheid en alle anderen moeten "simpeler" communiceren.
Ik walg van dergelijke onzin, dames en heren. Complex taalgebruik is een noodzaak! Hoe anders zouden baanbrekende en fascinerende filosofen hun ingewikkelde, doordachte en genuanceerde gedachtenstelsels uit de doeken moeten doen als ze zich moeten bedienen van "simpel" taalgebruik? Ik zie het al voor me: John Rawls "veil of ignorance" gereduceerd tot een burqa van kleinburgerlijkheid, Robert Nozick's "state of nature" omgesmolten tot een simpel "survival of the fittest" en Habermas' "Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit" verworden tot een "Franse en Engelse speeltuinen door de eeuwen heen". Onze werkelijkheid is nu eenmaal een complexe zaak, en om daar goed over te kunnen communiceren is complex taalgebruik essentieel.
Trouwens: Hannie maakt ook een domme fout. Zij denkt namelijk: "als zinnen simpeler zijn, dan begrijpen mensen het beter". Dat is natuurlijk niet zo. Een zin kan nog zo simpel zijn, qua opbouw en woordkeus, maar nog steeds niet begrepen worden. De oorzaak is dan het begrip van de lezer. En hoe simpel een overheid ook communiceert: als het begrip er niet is, komt het niet aan. De overheid kan zich dan beter richten op het verbeteren van het basisonderwijs, zodat onze kinderen beter begrijpend leren lezen. Anders laten ze zich in de luren leggen door mooie praatjesmakers: mensen die zaken heel simpel kunnen voorstellen, met als enig doel om misbruik van je te maken.
En Hannie zelf is daarvan een triest voorbeeld. Eventjes doorklikken op de website die ze lanceert, en het is duidelijk: deze actie is een reclamestunt. De initiatiefnemer is namelijk uitgeverij en trainingsbureau "Eenvoudig Communiceren" - een bedrijf dat tegen betaling maar al te graag overheden wil helpen "simpeler" te communiceren. Niks mis mee natuurlijk, zo'n promotiestunt. Sterker nog: mijn complimenten voor een goed bedrijfsconcept en mijn complimenten voor een goed in elkaar gezetten free publicity campagne, waar zelfs allerlei NGO's ook nog bij betrokken zijn. Maar Hannie heeft dat allemaal blijkbaar niet begrepen. Die snapt niet dat zij nu staat te preken om andermans kas te spekken, niet om een maatschappelijk probleem te verhelpen. Ik hoop voor haar dat er in haar contract in duidelijke termen staat dat ze een deel van de opbrengst krijgt.
