Is de Islam écht zo belabberd?
Geert Wilders komt er maar weer mooi mee weg tijdens de Algemene Beschouwingen - álle Moslims afdoen als een groot kwaad voor onze democratie, en claimen dat de Islam in zijn kern onverenigbaar is met een democratische rechtsstaat. En onze overige politici blijven zoeken naar een goede manier van ermee omgaan. Ze blijven roepen dat het niet goed is te generaliseren, en dat ze "krachtig afstand" nemen van zijn bewoordingen. Dat roept bij mij een ongemakkelijk gevoel op: het is overduidelijk dat Wilders ontzettend grof generaliseert, en zo'n grove generalisatie zou makkelijk door te prikken moeten zijn. Maar dat gebeurt niet: de overige politici blijven hangen in abstracte oproepen om aardig te zijn tegen "onze minderheden". Géén inhoudelijke argumenten dus, waarom de Islam wél compatibel zou zijn met een democratische rechtstaat. Aangezien niemand anders het doet, gooi ik hier een balletje op wat de heren en dames politici met liefde van me mogen lenen. Zijn er voorbeelden te bedenken waarin een Islamitisch heerser beleid heeft gevoerd dat consistent is met een democratische rechtstaat? Het antwoord: ja. Ik pik er één voorbeeld uit: Keizer Akbar de Grote uit India, in de zestiende eeuw. U zult misschien zeggen: waarom een voorbeeld uit zo lang geleden? Mijn antwoord is simpel: in de zestiende eeuw werd Europe verscheurd door een godsdienstrijd, beginnend met Luther in 1517, verdergaand met een scheuring in 1531 van de Kerk van Engeland met de Katholieke Kerk, en nog veel meer. Dit leidde tot meerdere massamoorden, waarvan de Bartolomeusnacht in 1572 slechts de bekendste was. Tegelijkertijd waren de Europeanen bezig de Indianen in Amerika uit te roeien, zonder genade. Sterker nog, de heren intellectuelen moesten nog beslissen of de Indianen überhaput wel een ziel hadden! Europa was in die tijd dus zo intolerant als maar zijn kon. Vergelijk dat met het beleid van keizer Akbar. Hij was zelf een moslim, maar trouwde met een Hindu van de Rajput-kaste, die tijdens haar huwelijk gewoon Hindu bleef. Sterker nog, Akbar voerde een in Europa destijds ondenkbaar beleid uit: in zijn rijk dienden alle religies gelijk behandeld te worden. Of iemand nu Moslim, Hindoe, Farsi, Buddhist, Christen of Jood was, hoorde allemaal niet uit te maken. Akbar stak veel tijd in het actief bestrijden van ongelijkheid tussen religies, organiseerde debatten tussen verschillende religies en had zelf een gevarieerd team van adviseurs uit elke religie. Terwijl in Europa zelfs de maar matig van elkaar verschillende Katholieken en Protestanten elkaar uitmoordden, keuvelden de Moslims gezellig met de Hindoes, Buddhisten en welk ander geloof er ook maar te vinden was in India. Een andere reden waarom dit voorbeeld interessant is, is omdat Akbar dit helemaal zelf bedacht heeft: zonder enige "westerse" invloed bedacht de Islamitische Akbar dat het goed zou zijn andere religies op gelijke voet te stellen en op even goede manier te behandelen als zijn eigen Islam. Hoezo komt Wilders er dan bij dat "tolerantie" een uniek Westerse waarde is, als het juist een Islamitische keizer was die als één van de eersten, zonder invloed van het toen achterlijke Westen, handen en voeten gaf aan zo'n typisch Westerse waarde? Voila: één simpel voorbeeld dat de visie van Wilders ontkracht. Let wel: ik wil niet ontkennen dat er problemen zijn met bepaalde minderheden. En dat we daar zeker iets aan moeten doen, staat vast. Maar Wilders irritante generalisaties zijn niet de manier om dit op te lossen.
